Stephen Z. Kovacs, 79, of Harleysville, died unexpectedly on Saturday, December 24, 2022. He was the husband of Myra E. Kovacs, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage.
Born in Akron, OH, Stephen was a son of the late Stephen and Irene Kovacs.
He earned his BA and MA in psychology from The University of Akron, MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson, Master's in International Affairs from University of Southern California, and his Doctorate in Education from George Mason University.
Stephen was a retired United States Army Colonel, serving 27 years. During this time, he served in the Vietnam War, had various assignments in Europe and culminating as the U.S. Army attaché to Norway. He received many awards and commendations including 3 Bronze Stars.
After his career in the military, he worked with the local government and community colleges. Stephen served as the County Administrator for Henry County, Virginia, a Psychology teacher and Business Manager at Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria, Virginia, a Vice President for Genesee Community College, Batavia, New York, and a Vice President for Montgomery County Community College, Blue Bell, PA.
During his retirement, Stephen traveled the world with Myra and enjoyed learning about and experiencing the cultures of the places he visited. Stephen also enjoyed cooking; he maintained a large collection of cookbooks and was constantly looking for ways to perfect his favorite dishes.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Stephen P. Kovacs and his wife Laura of Rye, New York, Peter C. Kovacs and his wife Karen of Aldie, Virginia, and Thomas A. Kovacs of Arlington, Virginia, a brother Daniel Kovacs and his wife Susan of Madison, New Jersey, a sister Judith Mandy of Sanary, France, 9 grandchildren, Christopher, Colin, Audrey, Ryan, Owen, Adam, William, Heidi, and Natalie and 3 nephews, Todd, Daniel, Matthew and 2 nieces, Sarah, and Allison.
Visitation with the family will be held from 11 AM – 12 PM on Monday, January 2, at the Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc., 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford, 18969, where a memorial service follows at 12 PM.
