Obituary

Robert L. Williams, Jr., 84, a long-time resident of Harleysville, PA, passed away Saturday afternoon, November 18, 2023, with family by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gail (Wert) Williams, on April 17, 2001. They had been married for almost 38 years at the time of her passing.

Born November 15, 1939, in Kingston, PA, he was the son of the late Robert L. Williams, Sr. and Florence (Hamilton) Williams. He graduated from Drexel University and was a Dean's Award graduate of the Eckels College of Mortuary Science. He was also a U. S. Navy veteran.

As a young man in 1965, Mr. Williams purchased the L. H. Dotts Funeral Home in the village of Skippack, PA, which he operated under the name R. L. Williams, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. In 1972, he purchased property just outside the village where he built the current facility of the funeral home and served the Skippack community for over 50 years. In 1998, he helped build and was an owner and partner of the Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc. in Franconia, PA. He retired in 2020 after over 60 years in the funeral service industry.

Mr. Williams was a board member of the Montgomery County Higher Education and Health Authority, a member of Warren Lodge #310 F. & A. M. in Collegeville, PA, a chairman of the Salvation Army Unit, and past president of the Montgomery County Funeral Directors Association. He was also a 32nd degree Mason with Lehigh Consistory, and a member of the Rajah Temple Shrine, Skippack Lions Club, Antique Automobile Club of America, Pioneer Automobile Club, Commercial Club at Port Indian, and Central Schwenkfelder Church in Worcester, PA, where he served on several boards and committees. His hobbies included working on and collecting antique automobiles, woodworking, and boating. Bob was known as a man of upstanding character and was a consummate gentleman. He was ever ready to help either a friend or stranger in need, and always put others first. He was a friend to many and will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty and generosity.

Surviving is his daughter, Wendy Williams-Hartman and her husband, Dr. Jeffery F. Hartman, of Harleysville, PA; two sisters, Elaine Smoot and her husband, Ralph T., of Camden-on-Gauley, WV, and Alice Shannon of Wilmington, DE. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Scott Rossman Williams, Jr. and his wife, Dr. Hayley Williams, of Shaker Heights, OH, and Robert Williams "Will" Hartman and Gail Elice Hartman of Harleysville, PA; and two step grandsons, Kalen Paul Hartman of New Market, MD, and Jeffery Jake Hartman of Ventura, CA.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Scott R. Williams; and a brother-in-law, Louis E. Shannon.

Family will receive friends for his viewing from 10-11:45 am on Friday, November 24, 2023, at the R. L. Williams, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 3440 Skippack Pike at Cedars Road, Skippack, where the public funeral service will begin at 12 pm. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories behind Central Schwenkfelder Church.
