Dr. Philip Gene Vitelli, a beloved physician, cherished husband, father and grandfather, will be remembered fondly for his unwavering compassion and dedication to healing. Born on February 20, 1939, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to the late Carmen and Louis Vitelli. Philip peacefully passed away on May 2, 2026, at the age of 87.
Philip earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He then completed his Medical Degree from Kansas City University of Osteopathic Medicine. Philip completed his 4 years of psychiatry residency while waiting to be called for the Vietnam War. He was never called to War, so Philip decided to fulfill his dream of becoming a surgeon and returned to school and hospital for another 4 years to complete his surgical residency. Throughout his esteemed 30-year medical career, he was not only recognized for his exceptional surgical skills but also for his gentle and patient approach to care. After retirement, he returned to psychiatry until 2025. His warm smile and unwavering support touched many lives, and his love for his patients and their families was evident in every interaction.
Beyond his remarkable medical career, Philip was a man of diverse passions. He found great joy in music, playing both the clarinet and saxophone, and he was an enthusiastic dancer who celebrated life with his beloved wife, Jie, through swing dancing. Their shared love was encapsulated in their favorite song, "First Dance," a melody in which they frequently relived the magic of their wedding day.
Philip cherished nature and animals, extending his nurturing spirit to every living being he encountered. His fondness for creatures great and small led him to adopt a female duck named Daisy, who found a new home at his pool after losing her mate. He was equally passionate about nature, enjoying golf and serene boat rides, celebrating life on and around the water.
His legacy will carry on through the many lives he touched, both personally and professionally. Philip is survived by his devoted wife Jie Vitelli; his children, daughter Andrea Vitelli Beneke and her husband Ray, and son Michael Vitelli and his wife Barbara; his cherished grandchildren, including Jake Beneke (Danielle), Lindsay Beneke (Chris), Sam Beneke (Ashley), Max Beneke, Austin Vitelli, Darien Vitelli (Dani), Gannon Vitelli and Braden Vitelli; as well as 5 great-grandchildren; his sister, Dolores Vitelli Ricci; stepdaughter Dina Walker and her husband Dirk Walker; and his fur baby, Bella. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Heaps, who remains in the hearts of their family.
As we prepare to celebrate Philip's remarkable life, let us come together to honor his legacy of love, compassion, and the joy he spread to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
The family will receive friends from 1-1:30 PM on Thursday, May 14, at the Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc., 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford, PA 18969. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, May 14 at Old Goshenhoppen Church Cemetery, 2092 Church Road, Harleysville, PA 19438.
