Michael Dougherty, 81, of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on February 19, 1945, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Mike lived a life rooted in hard work, laughter, service, and an unwavering love for family and friends. After spending much of his life in Oshkosh, he later enjoyed many years in Ocala, Florida, before making his home in Harleysville, Pennsylvania, where he cherished being closer to family.
Mike proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. During his military service, he was stationed in Dayton, Ohio, and the Philippines, experiences that helped shape his lifelong sense of duty, resilience, and appreciation for the people he met along the way.
Following his military service, Mike returned to Oshkosh, where he spent the majority of his career with Oshkosh Corporation as a skilled tool and die maker. He took great pride in his craft and in the friendships he built throughout the years, working alongside many of his closest friends.
While Mike's work ethic was admirable, it was his generous spirit and infectious personality that people will remember most. He always had a smile on his face and a smart remark ready to brighten someone's day. Mike never met a stranger because, in his eyes, everyone was a friend. Whether sharing a joke, lending a helping hand, or simply offering a warm smile, he had an incredible ability to make everyone feel welcome, valued, and at ease. His humor, kindness, and genuine interest in others created countless lifelong friendships and memories that will live on through those who knew and loved him.
Above all else, Mike was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Dougherty; his daughter, Rebecca Niszczak and her husband, Jonathan Niszczak; his stepson, Robert Rydzewski and his wife, Cathy Rydzewski; and his stepson, Todd Rydzewski and his wife, Carrie Rydzewski.
He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Michael Niszczak, Christopher Niszczak, Will Rydzewski, John Rydzewski, Noah Rydzewski, Sawyer Rydzewski, Lauren Rydzewski, and Reid Rydzewski. He was also blessed to become a great-grandfather to Colton Rydzewski and Bennet Rydzewski.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Marcella Dougherty, and his siblings, Bill Dougherty, Mary Dougherty, and Boots (Irwin) Dougherty.
Mike's greatest legacy is found not only in his family but also in the countless friendships he forged throughout his life. He believed that everyone deserved kindness, a good laugh, and a friendly conversation. His smile, quick wit, generous heart, and ability to make everyone feel like family are gifts that will never be forgotten.
In honoring Mike's memory, his family encourages everyone to do something he did so effortlessly: share a smile, tell a joke, strike up a conversation with someone new, and treat every person as if they were your best friend. There is no greater tribute to the way Mike lived his life.
