Martin Hichens, age 93, of Harleysville, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Cynthia Inslee (White) Hichens with whom he shared over 41 years of marriage.
Born August 19, 1932, in Exeter, UK, he was the son of the late Stephen and Marian Elizabeth (Pollard) Hichens.
Martin began playing the organ at age 13 while at Exeter School. He was both organist and choir director at various churches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He also volunteered for AARP in Souderton as a tax preparer.
In addition to playing the organ, other joys in his life included woodworking, crossword puzzles, and the beach at Ocracoke, North Carolina.
He earned a PhD from the University of Oxford, did postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania and at the University of Illinois, and then began working at Merck, retiring as Head of Preclinical Drug Metabolism.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons Marc Robert Stephen Hichens and his wife Barbara, and Peter David Hichens and his partner Becky Martinell; grandchildren Steven and Andrew Hichens. He was preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer June Kirchoff and his sister Margaret Willey.
A viewing for Martin will take place from 10:00-10:45 am on Wednesday March 11, 2026, where the family will greet guests at the Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home Inc., 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford, PA. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Emmanual Lutheran Church in Souderton, PA to be used for the organ maintenance fund.
