Marie Constable, 94, of Harleysville, passed away at her home in the Peter Becker Community on Monday, November 20, 2023. She was the wife of the late Joseph Constable, with whom she shared 71 years of marriage.
Born in Norristown, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Mary Barrick.
Marie was a graduate of Norristown High School, class of 1946. She was a member of the Norristown cheerleading squad and enjoyed acting. She was a cast member in the senior play. While in high school Marie worked part time at Jule's Sweet Shop. She enjoyed going dancing on Friday nights with her friends Anne and Mary.
Marie worked as a secretary and administrative assistant in the Department of Operations with the Norristown Area School District for more than thirty-eight years. She enjoyed her role in helping to get things done on behalf of the students and employees of the district.
When President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore were helicoptered to Norristown Area High School, Marie was part of the team that helped to ensure safety and efficiency for the event. It was an experience that she would never forget.
Marie first met her future husband Joe when she was only 13 years old. They met at 1208 Powell Street. He was a friend of her two older cousins, Nancy and Kitty, with whom she lived at the time. Later when Joe came home on leave from the service he took Marie to her high school junior prom. They kept in touch and when Joe returned home from the service they continued dating. They were married on May 30th 1948.
Over the years, 1208 Powell Street served as the hub for many Farrell- Barrick-Constable-Fogarty-Hallman-Hosey family gatherings. As the family grew, Marie and her cousins Nancy Hallman and Kitty Fogarty agreed to share the holiday hosting responsibilities. Marie became the Thanksgiving hostess. She and Joe enjoyed serving many Thanksgiving meals at their home on Whitehall Road.
Marie and Joe first volunteered as Democratic Committee Persons during the 1960 presidential election. They were both very impressed with John F. Kennedy. Marie was never one to talk about herself, however she was proud of the fact that over time she had the opportunity to shake hands with each of the Kennedy brothers, John, Robert and Ted.
Marie had an interest in helping children who had disabilities and special needs. She served on the Board of Trustees of The Child Development Foundation for more than 20 years. She was also a supporter of Boys Town, St. Joseph's Indian School and the Deaf Research Foundation.
Marie and her husband Joe were avid fans of Methacton High School sports teams. They enjoyed watching their children compete for Methacton. They continued to follow Methacton sports for many years after their son and daughter had graduated.
Marie always enjoyed family time at the shore. Haddon Hall (now Resorts International) was the favorite site when Mark and Cathy were younger. Later on, when Mark and Cathy had families of their own, Ocean City became the family summer place to go. She always did her best to bring family together and she made sure to stock the kitchen with everyone's food of choice.
Marie is survived by her son Mark Constable (Nancy), daughter Cathy Constable (Mary) grandsons Korey Constable (Deanna) and Adam Umanoff (Daniela) her great- granddaughter Adalina Umanoff and her sister-in-law Jane (Caprione) Constable. She was preceded in death by her brother Richard (Doc) Barrick and her brother-in-law Richard Constable.
