Dr. Lester Clark Hallman, Jr., age 91 of Souderton, quietly passed away with family by his side on October 8, 2023 at The Community at Rockhill.
Born on December 5, 1931, the son of the late Marion A. Kidd Hallman and Lester C. Hallman, Sr., Les grew up in Souderton where he graduated from high school in 1949. He then attended Penn State University, where he received his B.S. degree in Animal Nutrition in 1953, before proudly serving his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. During the years following his honorable discharge, Les continued his education, earning first his M.S. degree from the University of Wyoming, and then his PhD. from Penn State, both in Animal Nutrition.
On June 12, 1954, Les wed Joan M. Keller, beginning a loving marriage that would span over 69 years. Together they raised their four children, and then happily watched their family grow to include ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Over the years Les' employment took them to different states throughout the country, including jobs at GLF (now Agway), taking them to Trumansburg and Tully, NY; BASF and Arm & Hammer, living in Long Valley, NJ; private consultant to the livestock industries, in Tolleson AZ; and finally returning to Souderton in 1986 as one of the owners of Hallman's Creamery. Along the way they gathered many lifelong friends, and felt blessed to have them in their lives.
Les raised horses for many years, enjoyed countless hours hunting and fishing in the Pennsylvania outdoors, and had a passion for reading. He seemed to always have several books nearby, and would gladly pass along a book to anyone he thought would enjoy the subject. Les was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Souderton, a longtime member of the Harleysville Lions Club, a member of Paradise Falls Lutheran Association, and was a member of Bonnell Run Hunting and Fishing.
In addition to his parents, Lester was preceded in death by his daughter, Holly C. Hallman; his sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Art Bond; his brother, Harvey Hallman; his brother-in-law, Joe Steen, and his stepmother, Doris Hallman. He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Hallman; his sons, L. Clark (Sherri) Hallman III.; H. Alan Hallman; and Eric (Tara) Hallman; his grandchildren, Clay (Mackenzie) Hallman, Michelle (Rich) Macrane, Kerry (Lee) Stouch, Rand (Christina) Hallman, Sage (Rob) Ilas, Eden (Kyle) Barker, Chloe (Luc) VanAlstine-Billon, Matt Hallman, Shelby (Matt Williams) Hallman, and Luke Hallman; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Emma (Fern) Mele, and Rosanna Lee Steen; and sister-in-law, Fredricka Hallman; as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Grand View Hospital and The Community at Rockhill for their gentle care of Les, and for the compassion given to all of the family during this time.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford, PA on Saturday, November 4, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed immediately at 11:00 am by a Memorial Service with Military Honors.
