Obituary

Lawrence W. Smith, 57, of Harleysville, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018 due to complications from Hemochromatosis. He was the husband of Kelly (Collins) Smith.

Born January 19, 1961 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was a son of the late Charles and Lois (Crux) Smith. In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by his children, Bronwyn Elise and Spencer James, a brother David and his wife Joy, mother-in-law Jacqueline Kotran and her husband Paul, sister/brother-in-law Tracy and Rod Derstine, brother-in-law Michael Collins, along with many cousins and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Richard.

Larry graduated from Swissvale High School in 1979 and headed to his beloved Penn State University to become an engineer, embracing everything there was about Happy Valley – especially football and Joe Paterno. At PSU, he greatly expanded his family by joining the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Larry often commented that his fraternity experience was life-changing, teaching him so much about life, leadership and the incredible bond of brotherhood. It is here where Larry befriended Kelly when she became a Little Sister in 1981.

After graduating from PSU in 1983, Larry pursued a career as Project Engineer at ETL Testing Laboratories in Cortland, New York. Here he worked in Safety and later specialized in HVAC where he enjoyed client travel to Australia, Korea, Japan as well as other U.S. locations. Cortland filled his heart with lifelong friends, bowling and golf leagues and many more buddies to share in his love of music and concert road trips. When friendship flourished into true love, Larry relocated to Hatfield, PA where he married his soul mate, Kelly, in 1989.

Larry then worked three years as a Project Engineer at Bergmann Associates, an engineering consulting firm in Glenside followed by several years at Merck Sharp & Dohme, West Point, as a contract Facilities Engineer. During his 7-year tenure as Senior Facilities Engineer at Siemens Health Services, Malvern, Larry earned his MBA from Penn State Great Valley. Larry was proud to attend the commencement ceremony at State College and accept his degree alongside Kelly, Bronwyn and Spencer, often remembered by the kids' first ice cream cone at the Creamery and when "Daddy was wearing a dress."

Larry then accepted a challenging opportunity as a founding employee at a start-up biotech firm, Locus Pharmaceuticals. As Facilities Manager, Larry led the real estate search, built out the office, chemistry and biology labs and developed the necessary safety, environmental and security programs. In 2005, Larry became Facilities Manager at McNeil Nutritionals and in 2011, transferred to Janssen Pharmaceuticals in Spring House as Site Manager.

Larry was a devoted husband and father always making time to participate in his children's lives as coach to softball and baseball teams and later serving on the Board of the Souderton Aquatics Booster Club. Whenever there was a softball, baseball or lacrosse game, swim meet or water polo game, you would find Larry in the stands cheering on his kids and the team.
