Joseph C. Springer, formerly of Lederach, PA, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, July 24, 2022, his 93 rd birthday. He was the husband of Joan (Berstler) Springer for 53 years. Joan passed away in December of 2009. He was preceded in death by a son, Roger, in 1972.
Born July 24, 1929, in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of Raymond Slater Springer and Mildred (Allison) Springer. He graduated from Radnor High School in 1948. After high school, he worked for the Philadelphia Electric Company - Main Line Division in Ardmore, PA. He left to join the U.S. Marines where he served for five years.
Following his service in the military, Mr. Springer entered West Chester State Teachers College in 1953, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Science, Health and Physical Education. He immediately taught Physical Education in the West Point Elementary School in the North Penn School District. In 1962, he began teaching in the Souderton School District where he taught at the Souderton Junior High School from l962-1965, Indian Valley Junior High School from 1965-1968, and then transferred to teaching health and physical education in many of the district elementary schools. He retired in June of 1993 after 35 years of teaching.
Mr. Springer enjoyed playing sports and coaching many of them. He was very active in the Montgomery County Senior Games, Pennsylvania State Games and the United States Senior Olympics, which was later renamed the United States Senior Games. In 3-on-3 basketball, Joe was the captain and coach of the Pennsylvania team which won medals in 1991 in Syracuse, NY, as well as in 1995 in San Antonio. TX. The team's home was the Senior Adult Activity Center in Harleysville, PA.
Joe was a member of the American Legion Post No. 203 in Schwenksville, PA. He was also a long-time member of the Graterford Bible Fellowship Church, where he served in various capacities.
Surviving are four sons: Steve and wife Barbara of Potomac. MD, David and wife Lisa of Harleysville, Joseph N. and wife Rhonda of Harleysville and Mark of Collegeville. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Nick, Mike. Danielle, Joe, Drew and Madison; and one great grandchild, Gabriel. In addition to his wife and son, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean (Springer) Yervelli and Ruth (Springer) Jenkins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at 11am on Saturday, August 6 at Graterford Bible Fellowship Church, 693 Church Road, Graterford, PA 19426, where family will receive friends from 10-10:45am.
