Obituary

After nearly 91 years of an amazing life John D. Nuschke, Sr. MD, died suddenly in his home with family members present. He was born in 1931 in Olean New York and raised in Austin, PA. He was the youngest of 3 brothers and learned the value of diligence and hard work while assisting his father in their hardware store. He worked his way thru college and medical school and graduated from Penn State and Hahnemann Medical College. He served his internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem where he met his wife of 61 years Mary Bonner. He enlisted in the United States Navy after they married and served as chief medical officer aboard a ship while stationed in Norfolk, VA. After this service to his country, he returned to Pennsylvania to provide medical care to the residents of Montgomery and Bucks Counties. He enjoyed delivering babies, making house calls, being first assistant in surgery and seeing patients in the office. He served as medical director of several nursing homes and an insurance company and was proud to have been part of the staff at Grand View Hospital. He loved to shop at Landis's supermarket where countless former patients still recognized him many years after his retirement and appreciated the care he provided to them.

His interests extended way beyond medicine. He enjoyed raising and supporting the education of his four children. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and belonged to fishing clubs in Pennsylvania and Canada. He enjoyed exercising and participated in jogging, hiking and bicycling. He was an expert skier. In the 1970's he learned to fly and landed many rented Cessna airplanes at Pennridge airport. He always had a garden and enjoyed attending to the plants. He also enjoyed sailing and was fortunate to be able to captain sunset cruises for his family and friends in the Gulf of Mexico. He spent many hours on the tennis courts trying to win a few games. He particularly enjoyed lively conversation during meals with friends and family. He attended to his wife's chronic illness for over 10 years until her passing. Despite his own medical conditions, he remained independent thru his lifetime and was able to play nine holes of golf on his 90 th birthday.

He will be forever missed but was loved and respected by his family and friends. He was an all-around good guy and had a full life well lived.
