Jacob Merrill Bishop, adoring husband, loving father, and cherished Pop-Pop, passed away at the age of 89, on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at Peter Becker Community, Harleysville, where he was a long-time resident. He was the husband of Anna Mae Bishop with whom he shared 66 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Steven Bishop, husband of Athena Katsifis, and Kathleen Taylor, wife of John Taylor, plus his grandchildren Allison Taylor, Steven Taylor, Eleni Toto and Georgia Toto. He is also survived by his brother, Bruce Hemmerle, husband of Sandy Hemmerle. He was preceded in death by brothers Robert and Walter, and his sisters Gladys and Nancy.
Born in Norristown, he was a son of the late Robert and Irene Bishop. A graduate of Lansdale High School, class of 1951, Mr. Bishop worked as a tool and die maker for Hunter Spring, before joining Vulcan Spring and Manufacturing as its second employee, where he worked until his retirement. While at Vulcan Spring, he was awarded at patent for a "retractor cable connector for tethered product display" on March 21, 2000.
A "jack of all trades," Mr. Bishop designed and built his own home in Towamencin, where he lived with his family for 45 years. In that neighborhood he was well known for his gardens and fruit trees, the baseball field he built in his yard, and for being "the guy who could build or fix most anything." He brought all these pursuits to the Peter Becker Community, through both caring for a garden space and being instrumental in the creation and development of a wood shop. For many years, alongside his wife, Anna Mae, he helped build the numerous display pieces for the Peter Becker Community's annual flower show. In high school, Mr. Bishop represented Lansdale High School in the All-State choir, and always had music in his life, and especially loved classical music.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, September 15, in the chapel at Peter Becker Community, 800 Maple Ave., Harleysville, 19438, where the family will receive friends from 10-10:45 AM.
