Floyd Derstein Nice, 88, passed away on June 21, 2024 at his home in Telford. He was married to Joanne M. Kratz Nice, his beloved wife of 66 years. They resided for most of their married life in the Souderton-Telford area of PA.
The first two years of married life were spent in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was employed at University Hospitals of Cleveland, in 1-W alternate service.
He was the kind and loving father of Andrew J. Nice (Tricia), Telford, PA and Nicole J. Nice-Hewett (Randall), Pittsville, MD and grandfather to Ashlynn Brininger, Dagsboro, DE and Felicity Brininger, Salisbury, MD, step-grandfather to Zach Hunter and Jacob Hunter, Telford, PA and Randell Hewett, Jr., and step-great-grandfather to Lola Anne Hewett, Ruby Mae Hewett and Ella Fae Hewett.
Floyd was born on November 23, 1935, in Souderton, PA. He was the third of seven children born to Garrett M. and Mamie (Derstein) Nice.
He graduated from 10th grade at Kulpsville School. After graduation, he continued to live and work on his uncle and aunt's farm in Lansdale, where he had resided since he was 11. He was a dedicated and hard- working man at all times. He initially worked for William B. Lewis in plumbing; Heavener Trucking as a truck driver; Rodgers Construction in HVAC and finished as a truck driver for Mopac (now JBS) driving almost 40 years to NYC every day with a load of beef. His customers in NYC found him to be reliable and dependable and he made many friends there in those years. Post-retirement, he worked part-time for Manheim Auto Auction until he fully retired December 2023.
He so loved spending time with his family and friends. Many memories were made at their cabin in Wellsboro, PA. Floyd also loved fishing and hunting. He especially favored deep sea fishing, mostly at locations in New Jersey but also in the Florida Keys in later years. Hunting and fishing trips to Canada were big on his list.
Floyd thrived on doing work, service or favors to others. He and a good friend did many odd jobs for those in need, as well as maintaining a side-type business of cutting, splitting, stacking and selling firewood. He also joined several church service groups to Haiti, and to southern US states hit by disasters. In retirement, he enjoyed volunteering for MCC Material Resource Center of Harleysville.
Floyd was a member of Souderton Mennonite Church where he served as a trustee, usher, SS team leader and deacon. He was also a member of the Souderton-Harleysville Fish and Gun Club.
Along with his wife and children and two granddaughters, he is survived by three sisters, Pauline Price, Blanche Nyce and Linda Derstine. Preceding him in death along with his parents were granddaughter, Alexis Brininger; three brothers, Ralph D. Nice, Garrett D. and John D. Nice; and a brother-in-law, Willard Price.
Burial and Service will be Private at the convenience of the family.
