Obituary

Eva Detweiler Delp, went to be with her Lord on November 30, 2021.  Eva was the daughter of Hiram and Anna Rickert Delp, and was one of their eleven children.  She is survived by one sister, Mildred Willouer, a sister-in-law, Esther Delp, a brother-in-law, William B. Freed and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Eva was first employed by Norman Derstine, Franconia PA and then went to work at Keller's Creamery, Harleysville, PA until her retirement .  She was a very hard worker and always had entertaining stories about her day's work.

At home, Eva took great pride in her flower beds and vegetable garden.  She loved flowers, especially the petunias that lined the driveway.  Indoors, she always had the kitchen window sill lined with potted plants.  She was always rooting her African violets and they always had beautiful blossoms.

Another favorite past time for Eva was making and donating quilts.  Evenings were spent either cross stitching or quilting.  She also enjoyed sewing quilt tops   She donated many beautiful quilts to MCC and Dock Mennonite Academy (previously Penn View Christian School).   A lifetime member at Rockhill Mennonite Church, she taught Sunday School for the kindergarten children.  She also participated faithfully in the sewing circle.  She was a faithful supporter of the Rockhill Mennonite Church softball team, attending almost every game and treating the team to an end of season  Chicken Barbecue feast put on by Eva and her sisters, Naomi and Irene.  The three sisters also were the hospitality committee at the church for a number of years.  It was a treat to be invited to their home for a meal, but being invited for leftovers was equally as satisfying!

Eva's nieces and nephews remember well the Christmas dinners held in the basement  of the home of Naomi, Irene and Eva.  First, an amazing dinner was served.  Christmas carols were sung.  Following the meal, all of the children (all 32 of them!)  had to go to another room to play while the room was transformed.  When the children returned, there was a table loaded to the ceiling with presents for each niece and nephew.  Following Christmas, Naomi, Irene, and Eva would visit the homes of their nieces and nephews to view all of their presents.  They treated the nieces and nephews like their own children.

While Eva was more of a home body, she did enjoy traveling with her two sisters, and often with other friends.  The Delp sisters were proud to have visited all 50 of the United States.

In her later years, Eva suffered a stroke which left her right side very limited in use.  Eva's determination  and fierce independence served her well.    She lamented not being able to garden anymore, but was always thankful that she could still be independent.  She never wanted anyone's help as long as she could do things for herself.

Eva lived with her two sisters, Naomi and Irene, at 436 Godshall Road for over 50 years.  In 2016, it became necessary to move to a place that could help with her care.   She made herself content at Souderton Mennonite Home, but 436 was always her real home and she missed it greatly.  It was part of the land of the Delp family farm, and it was hard for Eva to leave this place that she knew since she was born.  There were many stories of planting vegetables, sledding on the farm with the neighbors, and the shenanigans that went on with her siblings.

For those desiring to make a memorial contributions in Eva's honor, they may be made in memory of Eva D. Delp to Mennonite Central Committee  or at https://donate.mcc.org or to support her great niece, Donna Delp de Pitman at CTEN, PO BOX 291307, KERRVILLE, TX,  78029-1307.  Please include a note that it is for Peter and Donna Pitman.
