Donald L. Hillegas, age 79, of Perkasie, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Nancy Carole (Metz) Hillegas, with whom he shared over 52 years of marriage.
Born December 31, 1945, in Lansdale, he was a son of the late Lester S. and Lillie S. (Huber) Hillegas.
Donald was an Unites States Army Veteran, serving during Vietnam. Following his discharge from the Army, Donald graduated from West Chester State Teachers College. He taught early American history in the Methacton School District for 34 years to high school and middle school students. For a period of time, Donald was the chair of the Social Studies Department in the Methacton School District. In addition, he was excited to share his teaching skills by mentoring student teachers in his classroom and later in his career he also taught methods in student teaching at Ursinus College for 3 years.
Donald was a life-long Lutheran. Over the years, he held various leadership and committee positions in the church, including church council vice president and president, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, as well as the chair of the Stewardship and Evangelism Committees.
In his free time, Donald enjoyed gardening and always had a large vegetable garden in the summer. He also liked sharing his passion for history with his family by visiting historical sites on vacations. Donald was also quite handy with household repairs and renovations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Michael C. Hillegas of Perkasie and Aimee E. Hillegas of Gilbertsville. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Donald Keneagy, Richard Metz; sisters-in-law Ruth Ann (Metz) Worrell, Marilyn Bobb, 4 nieces, and 5 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Lester and Lillie (Huber) Hillegas, his sister Carol (Hillegas) Keneagy, sister-in-law Roberta Metz, brother-in-law John Worrell, and niece Lori (Worrell) Judge.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 107 West Lincoln Avenue, Telford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Donald's name may be made to the church at the address above for support of St. Paul's Blessing Box and Lutheran World Disaster Relief.
