Obituary

Deborah Jo Peterson, age 69, of Harleysville, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Lance Peterson, mother to Abby Peterson, and soon to be grandmother to her first granddaughter.

Born October 21, 1954, in Flemington New Jersey, she was a daughter of the late Joseph R. and Rena V. (Bidewell) Hansen. Growing up in Milford, New Jersey she was a wild child of the early 70's, lover of books, horses, plants, birds and being in nature. Although shy in her early life, she ended up having a passion for people, whether that was through public speaking or cultivating many lasting friendships and relationships
throughout her life.

An inspiring historian and researcher, Deb left an indelible mark on the American historical community. Her vast knowledge of the 18th century served as a treasure trove of information, readily accessible due to her charitable willingness to share. Her research into the myths of early American foodways made her unpopular with some and a hero to most. By paving the way for women researchers, she contributed significantly to the field and broadened understanding of social dynamics, culinary culture, trade systems, domestic duties and more through her inquisitive and innovative mind. As a retired shop owner, she sold hard to find colonial cooking ingredients, staples and treats, products that were very helpful with other people in the community and also as a teaching aid for the public. A renowned speaker, Deb's presentations were always
engaging, especially when discussing her research. Her written work includes manuscripts and a highly regarded book that will be available resources for years to come.

Through the hobby is where she met and fell in love with her husband Lance, with whom she shared over 29 years of marriage. They welcomed their daughter Abigail in 1993. She was a wonderful wife and mother and had touched hundreds of lives. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her well.

In addition to her husband Lance, Deborah is survived by her daughter, Abigail Peterson; daughter-in-law, Brianna (Jones) Peterson; sister, Linda (Hansen) Aspinall, and multiple other members of family.

A memorial service for Deborah will take place at a later date.
