Daniel P. Hughes, 36, of Philadelphia, formerly of Harleysville, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
Born in Lansdale, he was a son of David and Mary Jo Hughes. Daniel was a graduate of Souderton Area High School, class of 2005, and a 2009 graduate of University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA.
Dan participated in the Harleysville Youth Community Baseball program beginning with T-ball through Connie Mack, in both the spring and fall seasons. He played soccer for the Harleysville Community Intramural program and was a member of the Harleysville Hurricanes travel soccer teams.
During his time in the Souderton Area School District, Dan discovered his artistic talents especially in senior high school under the guidance of art teacher Mrs. Susan Wright. He continued to hone his skills at UArts, becoming a freelance illustrator upon graduation.
After graduation, Dan remained living and working in Philadelphia, the city he loved. He was a founding resident of "The Ox" warehouse in the Fishtown section of the city. He became a fixture in the music and art community, booking and promoting the DIY music scene, designing t-shirts, posters and album covers for many up-and-coming Philly musical acts. He was very proud when many of the artists he worked with became successful and enjoyed seeing them perform in person and on the late-night television circuit, especially the band, Japanese Breakfast, who were nominated in the Best New Artist Category of the 2022 Grammy Awards. Another proud moment came during the TV show, Mare of Easttown, when one of the female characters appeared in a scene wearing one of the t-shirts Dan had designed and printed for another Philly band. Also, he was part owner of a cassette tape music venture, Endless Daze.
Besides his art and screen-printing businesses, Daniel enjoyed gardening, cooking, experimenting with new recipes, music, and playing baseball in the 8 th & Poplar pickup games. He loved to travel and over the years visited many countries in Europe as well as within the United States. He was hopelessly devoted to his cat, "Cat", until she passed away in 2021.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Allison Hughes of Wilkes Barre; a brother, Kevin Hughes of Harleysville; his paternal grandmother, Alice Hughes of Sellersville; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Elmer Hughes; maternal grandparents, William and Margaret Diehl; aunts, Anne Diehl and Kathleen Fluss; and cousin, Jimmy Brady. Dan also leaves behind a wonderfully supportive community of friends in Philadelphia and elsewhere. So many people like to say, "I know Dan Hughes".
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 25, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc., 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford, PA 18969, and again on Monday, September 26, from 10-10:45 am at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 1601 Derstine Road, Hatfield, PA 19440, where a funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM. Interment will take place in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org), American Heart Association (https://www.heart.org), Alzheimer's Association (https://www.alz.org) or the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (https://bcan.org).
Danny (to his family), Dan (to his Philly family), will remain in our hearts and minds forever. We fondly remember his great laugh and quirky sense of humor. He left us much too soon.
