Charles A. Wetzel, 91, a resident of Harleysville since 1959, passed away at Peter Becker Community on Tuesday evening, December 21, 2021. He and his wife, Nancy L. (Hess) Wetzel, celebrated their 65 th wedding anniversary on August 25 th of this year.
Born October 1, 1930, in Allentown, PA, he was the son of the late Alvin and Doris (Roth) Wetzel. He was a 1948 graduate of East Greenville High School. He earned his bachelor's degree from Millersville University and his master's degree from Lehigh University. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Wetzel began his career in education in the Central Bucks School District as a woodshop teacher at Lenape Junior High School, later becoming assistant principal and then principal. He then served as principal of Unami Junior High School until retirement. He later worked for a short period of time as a woodshop teacher at Penn View Christian School before beginning part-time employment for twenty years as a draftsman and model builder for Lederach Architects.
Mr. Wetzel was an active long-time member of Christ Reformed Church at Indian Creek in Telford, PA, where he taught Sunday school and served on consistory. He was a member of Warren Lodge #310 F. & A. M. of Collegeville, PA, and was a 32 nd degree mason with Lehigh Consistory. He was also a member of the Harleysville Lions Club. Mr. Wetzel's gentle and patient nature enabled him to excel at woodcarving and painting, creating intricate works of art out of simple blocks of wood. Mr. Wetzel enjoyed traveling and cherished time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Debra Harkins and her husband, Dale, of Indianapolis, IN, Gail Pezzuto and her husband, James, of Mount Joy, PA, and Ellen Van Patten and her husband, Wayne, of Harleysville, PA; a brother, Robert Wetzel of Elizabethtown, PA; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three siblings: Jack, Richard and Alma Wetzel.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 1pm on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Christ Reformed Church at Indian Creek, 171 Church Rd., Telford, PA, where friends may call for his viewing from 12-12:45pm. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc. of Franconia Twp., PA.
