Obituary

Betty Jo "Joey" Hayes, age 72, of Hatfield, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024. She was the beloved wife of the late James "Jim" Edward Hayes, to whom she was married for over thirty years.

Born October 11, 1952, in Greenwood, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Lucian Dower and Sara Frances (Medlock) Babb.

She was a teacher who taught children of all ages, from kindergarten to 12th grade, but eventually found her true calling in teaching seventh grade special education at Arcola Intermediate School. Anyone who was lucky enough to know Joey could see how devoted she was to her
friends and family. From a young age, she was always a faithful church member. She sang in choirs, rang handbells, volunteered for countless groups and committees, and made herself available to anyone who needed her. Joey could strike up a conversation with anyone about anything, from how the Phillies' and Eagles' seasons were going to whatever crazy show she watched on TV the night before. Despite living in Hatfield for
more than three decades, she never lost her southern hospitality (or accent).

Joey is survived by her children Kelly Lynn Hayes and her partner Matt Murray, Steven Lacy Hayes and his wife Caitlin; grandchildren Olive, Nellie, and Felix Hayes; sisters Sandra Babb, Judy Davis and her husband Jim, Debbie Babb; sister-in-law Shirley Frances Hayes. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Brenda Faye Babb.

A memorial service for Joey will take place at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Christ United Methodist Church, 1020 S. Valley Forge Road, Lansdale, PA 19446, where the family will greet guests from 10:00 – 10:45 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joey's name may be made to either the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by clicking here , or to Christ United Methodist Church at the address above.
