Barry Richard Evans, age 78, a lifelong resident of Harleysville, died at his residence, Saturday afternoon, Dec. 30, 2023. Barry was the husband of Shirley A. Evans. The couple celebrated 53 years of marriage on April 4, 2023.
Barry was born in Loysville, PA, Perry County, to the late Charles Raymond and Elva V. (Range) Evans. He graduated from Souderton Area High School in 1964. The following year, Barry enlisted in the Navy and served for four years and then was honorably discharged. He received the National Defense Service Medal.
Barry was employed by Alderfer Bologna Co., Harleysville, now known as Leidys, LLC, Harleysville, where he was plant supervisor and a dedicated, hardworking employee.
Barry was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Harleysville, where he served as an usher, greeter and member of the property committee. He assisted with many clean up days by maintaining the flower beds and keeping the shrubs trimmed.
Barry and Shirley enjoyed going to Lancaster County to visit relatives as well as visiting Kitchen Kettle, Shady Maple Farmers Market, Bird-in-Hand Restaurant and Rockvale Outlets. They saw almost all the shows at Sight & Sound Theatre in Stradsburg. They saw different performances at the American Music Theatre such as The Oak Ridge Boys, Charlie Pride, Christmas Shows and the Gaithers. They enjoyed several bus trips on Hagey Tours and Perkiomen Tours to Von Trappe Lodge in Vermont, Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, TN and Branson, MO.
Barry was a lifetime member of Harleysville Volunteer Fire Co. as an ambulance driver. He was a member and volunteer for the Harleysville Senior Center, now known as Encore Experiences.
In addition to his wife Shirley, he is survived by daughter Debra L., wife of William (B J) Stott of Harleysville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Reida M. Evans in 2002.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Christ Lutheran Church, 2211 Mainland Road, Harleysville, PA 19438. The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Military Honors will be provided by US Navy. Burial in the adjoining church cemetery will be held at the family's convenience.
