Obituary

Barbara A. (Guza) Freitag, 90, a resident of Souderton, PA for almost 20 years, passed away at her home early Sunday morning, November 17, 2024.  Her devoted husband of 57 years, Frank J. Freitag, was by her side.  Prior to moving to Souderton, they were long-time residents of Doylestown, PA.

Born June 28, 1934, in Eckley, Luzerne County, PA, she was a daughter of the late Philip and Anna (Enos) Guza. She was a graduate of Hazleton State General Hospital School of Nursing.

Barbara worked as an operating room nurse for more than 40 years.  She started her career at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, where she ran the heart-lung machine during the early days of heart surgery.  Later she worked at Warminster Hospital and finally finished her career in the operating room at Doylestown Hospital, retiring in 1998. She was a member and treasurer of the Association of Operating Room Nurses.

An avid tennis player, Barbara was a member of the Philadelphia Tennis Association where she served as treasurer for several years and ran the Gold Cup Junior Tennis Program. She played for many years on tennis teams in the Middle States Tennis Association and Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island.  Her last tennis team in Hilton Head was named "Ladies of the Net."  She also enjoyed playing golf with family and friends. She was a fierce competitor and loved a challenge.

Barbara and her husband Frank enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Europe, with trips to England, Italy, France, Spain, Ireland, and Scotland. Barbara loved playing mahjong in Souderton with friends and neighbors in Harrington Village and in Hilton Head with the ladies of Shipyard and friends at the senior center.  She enjoyed playing games of ladder ball and putting contests on the beach and at home.  Barbara loved to cook for her family, and nothing made her happier than gathering the family around the table for one of her meals. Her homemade pierogies were a particular favorite, and a tradition passed down from her mother.

Barbara's children and grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy.  She is survived by her son, Mark of Hilton Head Island, SC, and her daughter, Jennifer and her husband, John Creel of Summit, NJ, and her two grandchildren, Anna and Michael. She is also survived by two brothers, Philip and Edward Guza. She was preceded in death by three siblings, Mary Lou Guza, Thomas Guza, and Theresa Caccese.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Mass at 11:00 am on Friday, November 22, 2024, at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 1601 Derstine Road, Hatfield, PA, where family will receive friends from 9:30-10:45 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Doylestown Health Foundation (595 West State St, Doylestown, PA 18901).  Arrangements are by the Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc. of Franconia, PA.
